Ho ho ho...

Partridges in pear trees are well and good, but at the market our 12 days of Christmas are a little bit different. We’d like to share...and let’s be honest, show off to you, our brilliant selection of stall holders for the first of our Christmas events. In the 12 days before Nov 21st, while our artists, designers and makers are as busy as bees preparing, we’ll give a tiny taste of what’s on offer, and just quietly, the talent at our November market is HUGE. So do pop back and keep checking our blog for the 12 days of Christmas...and sing along if you like!

October...

Sunday 3 October, 10am - 3pm

It’s the kind of month where things start getting exciting...gardens bloom, the sun shines, people get excited about summer, and at the market we showcase a beautiful collection of local artists, designers and makers who have been busy getting into the swing of the season.

Whether it be unique stationery, dainty ceramics, inspired jewels, limited run prints, or perhaps even tiny toy pandas that float your boat we have it all, in a market wonderland filled with talented stall holders and the beautiful things they create.

A few names we’d like to drop to help entice you along on Sunday...

Emily Snadden fresh from her whirlwind of national awards for her jaw droppingly beautiful jewellery.
Cathy McAuliffe from PhatFlats and her colour filled stationery stall (read the interview).
Studio Oat...a brand new stall at the market, full of refreshingly simple and eco friendly loveliness.
Simone Pfister’s gorgeous jewellery and art, eclectically fun wares from Jemima Boyer and gorgeous goodies from Sarah and Hamish Elliot will also make an appearance, much to our delight!

And of course our wonderful regular foodies, Bree from Mondo Mama’s Eats (see her delightful menu below) and Anja from Barista Sista, will keep you sustained and happy, with their delicious and wholesome eats and drinks.

We’re rather excited this month, to have a special someone joining us upstairs in our mini gallery...the celebrated (and awarded!) Wolfgang Glowacki, a Tasmanian and Australian wilderness landscape photographer. He specializes in capturing the beautiful Tasmanian landscape and wilderness, in all its intricate and inspiring glory! Perhaps peruse the market hall first, then head upstairs for a relax in the lounge with the Sunday papers and something yummy to eat and drink, then head in and meet Wolfgang and his beautiful collection of work....what a lovely lazy Sunday!

One more thing! Don’t forget to visit our friends at The Farmers Market this Sunday, held at the Melville St Carpark between 9-1. Gather everything you need in the way of amazingly fresh local and seasonal produce...if you like the idea of buying the food you eat, from the people who grow it, this is the place for you!

Here at the market we’ve harboured a little bit of a secret crush on the bright and bubbly designs from Phat Flats for some time now, and we’re so pleased Cathy will be joining us on Oct 3rd with her fun and quirky collection of stationery. Phat flats products manage to perfectly combine Cathy’s amazing illustrations with a serious rainbow of colours and restrained but fun designs, making them joyful, vibrant and kind of addictive...

When and why did your business begin?
I launched early December of 2008 with a range of four designs. I now have over 60 designs in different sizes and formats. I love creating a new design without having to 'run it past' anyone - compared to my other job as a graphic designer, often the work gets altered from the original idea. It's really fun to go into a shop and see my cards on display and know people are enjoying buying and receiving them. I recently had a baby girl and someone gave me a Phat Flats card to congratulate me - without realising it had come full circle!

What are your creations inspired by?
My artwork is inspired by memories of old toys from my childhood, some of the curtains my nanna had in her caravan, children's books from the 70's, fabric designs from the 50's. Iconic mid century furniture, retro robots, collecting things and simple patterns inspired by Scandinavian artists. Tyre swans and spring flowers!

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
I actually love just preparing to sell cards - presenting them nicely and packing them up is a great past time and quite relaxing. I also love dreaming up new designs, ideas, applications of ideas onto different materials and creating little flyers and brochures. I also love coming to The Market to have a stall - I get to explore further what people like about the ranges, feedback about what they'd like to see next and socialising with customers and other stallholders!

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
I just love paper and all things printed. That's the idea behind the name - printed on something flat and easy to send off in an express post bag or envelope. I have been enjoying putting together my height charts, it's rewarding to see such a big design printed and thrilling when people are excited to buy them as pressies for loved ones.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
I'm just finishing a range of great little gift cards with Christmas designs, including a small and large card featuring one of my most popular artworks of a tiny little house sitting on a big hill in the night. I will also have height charts featuring princesses and jungle animals, plus all my usual cards and gift wrap.

Favourite piece you make?
My favourite design I think is a small gift card called 'love bird', featuring a little pink bird with a love heart in his tail. It's my bestseller and one I haven't got tired of (yet!)

Spring in Hobart...

Sunday 5 September, 10am-3pm

Time to blow away the cobwebs and let the sunshine thaw you out...also time for a sunny new selection of stallholders exhibiting fresh designs, a pretty colour palette, and a host of exciting new products.

This Sunday, come visit the market for your monthly dose of premium local design, in the form of linen, candles, jewels, stationery, art, photography, ceramics, home wares and of course food glorious food!

We’ve handpicked a perfectly varied and incredibly talented group of local artists and designers for our September event, bound to put a Spring in your step. We don’t want to name drop (well maybe a little), so just to wet your whistle, here are just a few of the stalls you’ll see to this Sunday:

Red Wren’s delightfully designed linen, I Four Letter Word You - Rosie Shield’s spirited +eclectic collection of jewels. Little Twig, whose beautiful designs are always a winner! Janny McKinnon..simply dreamy photography. Selena de Carvalho, always intriguing to see what she’ll present at The Memory Store. Bree Mooney from Mondo Mama’s ........words can not describe the absolute feast she’ll be serving up to market goers this month, check out her menu, YUM.

Also, exhibiting in our mini gallery, we have two local artists Jen Symons and Nicola Smith...they have a beautiful artistic treat for your eyes, just up the staircase, so make sure you wander up for a look see, and just maybe, after you’ve seen the local artworks, you could have a relaxing coffee and a peruse of the Sunday papers in the lounge.

We could go on and on, but best you just pop along for a visit instead...
