Kate Allen from wix + wax

There is something cosy and warming about lighting a candle in Winter...particularly when it is a delicious handmade soy wax candle, housed in a gorgeous vintage glass jar. Clever Kate Allen from wix + wax, joins us at our June market, with her lovely collection of candles, softly scented and ready to go to a good home....perfect timing we think!

When and why did your business begin?
wix+wax started two Christmas' ago, when I made soy wax candles to give as gifts to friends and family. I have always had an appreciation for things handmade, and it was a great way to experiment with a new interest, and to receive honest feedback from people close to me whose input I value and am guided by.

What are your creations inspired by?
All things natural and respectful to the environment, expressed foremost through the use of recycled jars and decision to use soy wax. When I first started making candles I hunted around for empty jars and bottles that I already had, instead of buying new glassware. I quickly developed a fascination for the different shapes, patterns and colours of the glass and started going to second-hand shops and garage sales in search of unique and appealing containers that have had a previous life.

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
The people I meet. The experience of collecting preserving jars has been more enjoyable than I could have imagined. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to connect with people who once enjoyed preserving as ‘a way of life’, and to recreate the story of each glass for another generation.

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
I never tire of the essential oils in my range. The oils give the candles their identity and can change the mood of any room. I am enjoying the warm, earthy aromas of the ‘Christmas spice’ and ‘Suede’ blends at the moment.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
There are currently six essential oil blends in the wix+wax range, in an assortment of vintage glasses and preserving jars. Lots of thought and energy has gone into sourcing the glassware, and I hope people enjoy the fun in finding something unique!

Favourite piece you make?
The delicate gold printed glasses are all individual and the slight imperfections hint to the years of use they have had. They remind me of celebrating special occasions!
