Spring in Hobart...

Time to blow away the cobwebs and let the sunshine thaw you out...also time for a sunny new selection of stallholders exhibiting fresh designs, a pretty colour palette, and a host of exciting new products.

This Sunday, come visit the market for your monthly dose of premium local design, in the form of linen, candles, jewels, stationery, art, photography, ceramics, home wares and of course food glorious food!

We’ve handpicked a perfectly varied and incredibly talented group of local artists and designers for our September event, bound to put a Spring in your step. We don’t want to name drop (well maybe a little), so just to wet your whistle, here are just a few of the stalls you’ll see to this Sunday:

Red Wren’s delightfully designed linen, I Four Letter Word You - Rosie Shield’s spirited +eclectic collection of jewels. Little Twig, whose beautiful designs are always a winner! Janny McKinnon..simply dreamy photography. Selena de Carvalho, always intriguing to see what she’ll present at The Memory Store. Bree Mooney from Mondo Mama’s ........words can not describe the absolute feast she’ll be serving up to market goers this month, check out her menu, YUM.

Also, exhibiting in our mini gallery, we have two local artists Jen Symons and Nicola Smith...they have a beautiful artistic treat for your eyes, just up the staircase, so make sure you wander up for a look see, and just maybe, after you’ve seen the local artworks, you could have a relaxing coffee and a peruse of the Sunday papers in the lounge.

Haidee Neill from Miss Haidee

the market welcomes the very talented Miss Haidee to our September event. An eclectically beautiful, and refreshingly uncontrived children’s wear label, Miss Haidee imparts a unique style, and distinct quality to the design and construction of her range. Releasing small limited runs each season, for boys and girls, all lovingly made by hand. Cute models too! We’re very much looking forward to seeing her stall, in all it’s one off, vintage inspired glory, on Sept 5th...

When and why did your business begin?
The miss haidee label has been around for the last 6 years and has grown with my children as they have grown so naturally has my label. I have all ways made things to sell as some people may remember the hairclips I used to make ,that many a Hobart girl wore .. And apparently still do. I adore making children’s clothing as they are so into textiles and their appreciation of a dress is so transparent. I started the label in Byron Bay NSW but have recently moved back to Tasmania after 15 years away and I am finding the move very inspirational.

What are your creations inspired by?
I love fabrics its a medium you can really manipulate , it is endless with its possibilities. I don’t conform I love clashing fabrics mixing vintage floral with retro stripe and 80’s fluro , I have been sooo lucky as I brought a whole shop full of 70,s and 80.s fabrics from a haberdashery shop that closed down in Northern NSW hinterland. So I do have a fantastic supply. My studio is a world of inspiration, it is full of everything that pushes my creative buttons, 70”s craft books, fabrics. Trims, patterns my exquisite cutting table. Its my sanctuary and will never be neat it is all ways in a creative mess.

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
Seeing the delight in children’s faces when they fall in love with one of my creations.

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
Florals. Cottons definitely as people dislike anything nylon or polyester even thou some of the best vintage/ retro patterns are so synthetic.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
My signature vintage dress which is a work of art and looks great just hanging on a coat hanger on the wall.

Welcome to event number 16, our August market, and we certainly have a delightful mixed bag of stall holders once again, including some market favourites, and a nice pinch of fresh products and talent, to keep you on your toes!

...but to be more specific, eye spy with my little eye...Vibrant new wares from Cathy McAuliffe’s joyful Phat Flats range, a splash of colourful fun, and amazing illustrations make her designs a definite standout.

Wanting a little light in your life, to help you through the last lingering month of the Hobart Winter? The lovely Loz Abberton lights up our hallways with her innovative lighting designs, chandeliers + grandeliers and everything in between. Also Belinda Hills from Room Recipe joins us, with her very cool collection of repurposed objects, these range from pretty teacup lights, to lamps made from old surveyors equipment!

Something pretty...Sashiko Design will be bringing along her chic and beautifully constructed new range of dresses, and from Jane Busby of Scent3, something new, locally made perfumes and extra delicious smelling body products. Award winning jeweller Emily Snadden is also joining us, with her delicate and beautiful collection of silver jewellery.

Upstairs in the lounge we are excited to announce we have the Hunter Island Press exhibiting a beautiful selection of prints from several local artists, a must see for anyone interested in printmaking of the highest calibre.

And of course it wouldn’t be a Market Sunday without a visit to our friends at The Tasmanian Farmgate Market (Melville St carpark 9 – 1) Snap up your fresh seasonal produce, minus the supermarkets and long stints in cold storage. All produce is from Tasmania, making the food on offer the freshest you can buy, direct from the grower/farmer to your basket. We love that you can have a chat to the person that picked/bottled/baked or harvested your food, definitely the best (and yummiest!) way to shop.

Katrina Galloway from lottie cordelia & friends

In one last hurrah for winter, we welcome to our August market, Lottie Cordelia & Friends (Kat Galloway), and her range of extra special heat packs. Made with love...and a fair bit of quirkiness, these heatpacks are adorable, and beautifully crafted. SO much more fun to cuddle up to a foxy friend, or a cosy dinosaur than a boring old hot water bottle. And SO nice to see a uniquely designed and made product and it’s owner that just belong together. We can’t wait till August 1st, to see the Lottie Cordelia zoo, full of warm friends, waiting to go to a new home.

When and why did your business begin?
I have loved sewing all my life – learning at high school. But Lottie Cordelia and Friends started in 2009 when my daughter moved to Launceston for Uni. Nights are cold, so a heat bag was required. Who wants a boring heat bag? I set to work on creating a fun and quirky bag and soon it was named Cecil, then he had a friend Stanley Stegosaurus – there was no stopping us.

What are your creations inspired by?
I find inspiration in everything. Nature, pets, family (oops) children’s books, magazines anything really. I think- what if I was just a little person what would I like to cuddle up to, that was my friend to keep me warm, tell secrets, keep me company and to make me feel better when not well. The ideas are endless.

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
I love to think I have made something that is quite different and are more than just a heat pack. I enjoy the look on my customers face when they realise that these are not toys but a useful winter warmer. Every child has toys but do they have a heat bag that yells CUDDLE ME. Everyone smiles and always knows someone that this one or that one would suit. Something else about my product is that I have realised that they are not just for children but for all ages. Children, teenagers, mums, dads and grandparents. They look good, feel good and can fix absolutely anything!

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
I like to use block coloured fabric. Materials have to be warm, comforting, and soft. Mostly my fabric is upholstery fabric because of its ability to last, hold heat and the feeling it has when you cuddle up to it. I can then use pretty prints to add colour and uniqueness to each individual creation. I use whatever I can obtain. I have a wonderful friend that allows me to have his leftover pieces of material that cannot be used for his work. So essentially you could say that we recycle.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
A colourful and amazing array of eclectic, quirky creatures that are made with love. These little Lottie Cordelia’s are able to sooth your aching body, keep you warm, be a friend. They can also be put in a freezer to be used as a cold pack. There are new designs all the time. I try to have something different most of the time, but of course favourites are always there – Stanley Stegosaurus, pirates and puppies, birds and cats each one a little different to the last. I have people requesting all sorts of Lottie Cordelia’s, like a Pea in a Pod for a pregnant friend. A neck warmer for a boyfriend- so wrap around Croc was born.

Favourite piece you make?
My favourite piece is the one that makes my customer smile and you know the receiver is going to just love this new friend. How can I choose – I love them all, maybe Ellie Elephant, or Pedro Pirate, or African Elf or ... No , no too hard.

What do we have here...

Sunday 4 July, 10am - 3pm

Our July market is upon us and looking at this month’s comprehensive selection of stall holders we think we just about have everything you need for winter covered...

This month we have lovely wintry sorts of animals like squirrels and deer’s adorning jewels, fabric and stationery. We have gorgeous spice grinders...perfect for grinding cinnamon and nutmeg into warm winter treats. We have our brand new eating + greeting space upstairs, the lounge, to snuggle up and have a coffee and a catch up with a friend, and a wander through our mini gallery. We have some wonderful and exciting new handmade scents, along with beautiful miniature indoor gardens (aka terrariums, by the talented Shauna Mayben).

Bright bold prints add a much needed dash of colour to the Hobart Winter, and we have several artists, photographers and printmakers to tempt you. A delightful collection of woollen wares, for little people or grown-ups, made the old fashioned way. And last but not least...wonderful winter food...soup, delicious amazing soup and all sorts of other special eats from Bree at Mondo Mama. The usual great coffees and comforting pots of tea from Anja at Barista Sista, will help to keep hands and tummies warm too.

So come visit us on July 4th, maybe not to celebrate Independence day, but definitely to join us in celebrating our independent, local and brilliant artists, designers and makers.

Ps Don’t forget to visit our friends at The Farmer’s Market this Sunday, held at the Melville St Carpark between 9-1. Gather everything you need in the way of amazingly fresh local and seasonal produce, from bunches of baby carrots and bok choy, to freshly baked bread (best smell in the world!) meats, cheeses and SO much more...yum. If you like the idea of buying the food you eat, from the people who grow it, this is the place for you!

What a treat we have for visitors to the July market! We have handpicked a couple of local artists to take over our mini exhibition space upstairs, so people enjoying the cosy comfort of the lounge, will also be able to soak up some wonderful works from two very clever (and completely different) talents.

Firstly, we’d like to introduce Captain Blueberry (Rachel Tribout), with her lovely French accent, and a body of work that is bursting with vitality, colour, and a nice healthy pinch of the bizzarre...

Secondly, we have Janny McKinnon...whose photography perfectly captures the beauty and simplicity of nature. Her images are uncluttered, gentle and soft, and make us feel that lovely sense of awe and wonderment, at things that we see often, but don’t always appreciate.

Rachel Tribout from Captain Blueberry, illustrator

When and why did your business begin?
Captain Blueberry was born in a boat upon the high seas. I was giving my husband some stern words about the rigging of the sail while eating a blueberry muffin and dropping crumbs down my front. In 2009 I dropped anchor in the Derwent and set ashore my easel, my computer and my graphic tablet. Since then I’ve been building a collection of illustrations and paintings, and more recently soft toys, beanies and other furry things. I also do some graphic design work. My dream is to illustrate children’s books and I am in the process of building a portfolio.

What are your creations inspired by?
Lots of things: nature is a big one, also dreams and fantasies, the joy of childhood and environmental issues. There are also lots of talented artists out there that are very inspiring to me.

My monsters come from a different perspective; I started it as a fun way to express my creativity and an alternative to the structure and discipline I am trying to put into illustration. Since then I have realized the true mission: waking up people’s inner child!

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
I love that I can turn my ideas and feelings into the material world and share them with people. It is also very satisfying for me to be in the creative process. And it gives me the freedom to manage my time the way I want and live in pyjamas.

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
It varies; I love playing with colours, especially opposite colours. I have my periods: at the moment I like warm pastel colours, light pink and brown, but in a month I might be obsessed with blue. I go with the flow! I work my illustrations mainly using a graphic tablet to paint directly using photoshop, it is like painting but with what feels like more freedom and possibilities. I still like to use acrylic paints too. With my monsters, I love faux fur…. It gives them a unique look, they are so funny and cute; I also love felt and found fabrics.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
Light and fun things, lots of colors, a journey back into your inner child! You will find fury soft monsters ready to be adopted, prints of my illustrations, monster head helmets, beanies, and the captain herself.

Favourite piece you make?
I think I have the most fun sewing the beanies, they are every time a surprise, I laugh a lot on my own in the studio making them and the neighbours think I am mad. It’s so delightful to see them on people’s heads!

Janny McKinnon, photographer

When and why did your business begin?
I have practiced photography off and on for around 15yrs ... it has been a love of mine which has inspired me through-out my adult life (so far!). I began to create and market my cards as a vehicle for my images in 2005, and mounted prints in 2006. Although photography is an intensely personal practice for me, I very much enjoy sharing my images with others.

What are your creations inspired by?
My photographic practice is very much inspired by nature and the wonder I feel at the simple moments of beauty I encounter in everyday life. I consider my practice as an act of contemplation, and each image as a reflection the sublime that resides within all things.

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
My favourite thing about what I do is in the pleasure of creating something beautiful to share with others.

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
While I mostly work with photographic materials, I also very much enjoy aesthetic pleasure of working with fine water-colour papers from which my cards and books are created. I like the fact that each piece has been precisely measured and folded, yet is unique in that the papers invariably tear in irregular ways.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
Customers coming to my stall can expect to see photographic images in the forms of prints, cards and books, which (I hope) reflect or inspire a sense of wonder at the beauty of nature.

Favourite piece you make?
I don’t have a favourite piece!

Join us at our cosy winter market

Sunday 6 June, 10am - 3pm

Winter in Hobart brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...makes us want warm snuggly things, a pretty one off brooch to pin on a scarf, a jar of locally made jam to cheer up our morning toast, or maybe a cluster of candles to fill the house with a warm glow. Here at the market we’ve been busy gathering the very best locally designed and made treasures, to help you keep the Winter blues away!

What a delightful assortment of stall holders and their goodies we have to share with you this Sunday! So make sure you pop on an extra scarf, and come and visit us for some extra special products, people and food.

To keep things nice and fresh, June brings seven brand new faces to the market, with an assortment of beautiful designs ranging from bags, books, hats, knitwear, stationery and even helmets... Also, check out our blog interviews to see lovely new work from Wix and Wax and Emma Bugg. Plenty of Winter goodies from the rest of our market friends, including the cutest/quirkiest heat packs from Lottie Cordelia + friends, these are amazing! Market favourites the twiggies (Little Twig) are also returning, with a no doubt pretty and popular collection of treats.

Also, head upstairs for something new to the market...

This month we’re quietly launching the lounge. Laze the Sunday away over newspapers, magazines and a cosy piece of pumpkin pie on our lovely long shared tables.

While you’re out and about, don’t forget another wonderful must visit market... If you’re into good local produce, you’re no doubt already a regular at The Farmers market. It’s on Sundays 9 – 1 in the Melville St carpark. Such a good thing for our local farmers and growers...not to mention the customers who get the best and freshest in seasonal yumminess.
