And so this is Christmas...well nearly!

Our last market for the year is over, and what a special market it was. We hope all who came to our December event had a lovely time, and snapped up some beautiful presents. It was a very big day, and our thanks go to all who participated, helped out and attended.

To be honest we have been rather overwhelmed by the level of local support the market has received, and it is very rewarding to look back over the past year, and think that we really have succeeded in our vision of bringing a boutique art and design market into being...and most importantly to give exposure and a showcase to our immensely talented stall holders.

We have loved the mix of established artists and designers, alongside brand new businesses and products, many of which we are proud to say, had never been sold before the market. We love that locals now have a monthly market to attend, and that our customers can be assured of high quality art and design, and constantly changing products and people. And last but not least, we love that it’s Christmas in 9 sleeps! We wish you a very merry Christmas, and a safe and happy festive season...see you next year for plenty more excitement, and lots more local love.

festively fresh christmas market no.2!

Date: Sunday 13th December
Venue: Masonic Temple (3 Sandy Bay Rd)
Time: 10am - 4pm

With a sprinkling of Christmas love, and a festively fresh line-up of stallholders... we are proud to introduce our final market for 2009 (back in Feb 2010)!

We are so excited about the products on offer at this market, and have worked hard to gather an extra special collection of stallholders to cover a large and beautiful range of products, really making the market a shopping destination unlike any other.

We have brand new designs being launched by many of our stallholders, a lovely selection of Christmas stationery and packaging (the kind that is just as nice as the present inside). Also on offer...Painstakingly handmade products, many of which, just quietly, you won’t find anywhere else..

Lovely limited run designs, locally made of course and ready to go to a happy home. Also, perfect little presents like especially delicious jams, home wares, accessories, clothing, linen, gorgeous garden and lighting design! And to tempt you while you shop, we have some delightfully sweet treats, and some new, and rather special savoury offerings.

We’d love to see you there...with bells on!

stall holder profile:
Sarah + Hamish from The Easel & the Bass Violin

Sarah Elliot and husband Hamish, are the designing + making duo behind the vibrant and talented brand, The Easel and the Bass Violin. Lovely clever people, making LOVELY intriguing things, that’s what we’re all about at the market, and this newly formed business partnership is producing some beautiful products, perfect for special Christmas presents we think!

Sarah first studied Fine Art Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts, winning the Graduate Prize and went on to work in set design, winning the overall Melbourne Fringe Festival Award with a group of artists, installation and fine art. She loves the creative side of her work, handmaking everything for The Easel and the Bass Violin, while still spending as much time as she can with husband Hamish and their two children who are home schooled. Hamish applies his skills in the field of intricate paper cutting, or scherenschnitte, and the innovative use of silver in recreating antique lace designs. He is also Double Bassist who is a strong feature of the Tasmanian contemporary jazz scene being a working bassist for around ten ensembles.

When and why did Easel & the Bass Violin begin?
I have been designing and making my own dresses since I was young. Around a year ago I made some dresses and fabric brooches, and more than a few times people stopped me in the street to find out where I'd got "that beautiful dress, brooch etc.." so I thought: Hmmm maybe I should pursue this? Once I started designing and doing markets, Hamish started working with intricate paper cutting, and silver work. I'm also an oil painter hence the Easel and Hamish plays Double Bass hence the Bass Violin.

What are your creations inspired by?
We spend a lot of time out and about in the stunning Tasmanian landscape with our two beautiful kids, we find it so inspiring here. We are inspired by our favourite artists; Frida Khalo, Rothko, the Arts and Crafts movement and the writings of Ruskin as well as the Beautiful Jazz and Mininmalist music that we listen to and that Hamish plays. We are very inspired by our dear and creative friends here in Hobart who make it all possible!

What’s your favourite thing about what you do?
We love being creative! And we love making everything from scratch; being hands-on through every step of the process, from designing to making to then selling and getting to meet the person who's buying. We love making unique handmade items that are affordable and special.

Favourite colours/materials to work with?
We love working with rich bright colours and natural materials, we use a lot of silk, silver, vintage fabrics, vintage buttons and beautiful ribbon.

What can customers coming to the market expect to see at your stall?
Heaps of Colour! A full range of Silk Flowers, Brooches, Hair Slides, Necklaces and my Original Design Dresses in unique Japanese fabrics.

Personal favourite design in your range?
Our favourite would have to be our Grosgrain Ribbon / Vintage Button brooches; they remind me of my Grandma when she was young and would wear a corsage on a coat, she was a seamstress and ballroom dancer.
